Austria has no shortage of ski resorts, but few can claim to be as popular in the summer as they are in the winter. But then Walchsee is an exceptionally pretty place. The Tyrolean town is nestled between a dazzling Walchsee Lake and the famous Kaiser Mountain range. Its verdant green valleys are like something out of The Sound of Music, and they transform into a real-life winter wonderland after the first snow. Most visitors arrive in the winter to hit the slopes and enjoy the snowy surroundings with a warming glass of schnapps. However, nature lovers should take the time to explore the Lakeland area (or ‘schwemm’) during the warmer months, when you can spot a huge variety of flora and fauna, including the infamous sundew–an incredibly rare flesh eating plant.

Location: Walchsee–borderline beauty

The town of Walchsee is bursting with the beauty of nature–from the mountain range, to the lake, and the surrounding forests and countryside. It is located in the north west of Austria, in the Tyrol region, and is just a couple of kilometres south of the German border. Visitors will find it easy to reach the town via Innsbruck, Salzburg, or even Munich to the north.

Business: Diverse tourism sector

It is fair to say that the Walchsee economy centres around tourism, but it is an incredibly varied sector. Walchsee is home to a range of restaurants, hotels, hostels, ski resorts, golf clubs and guided tour businesses–and they are busy all year round. The tourist industry in Walchsee is a well-oiled machine, which plays to the strengths of its natural surroundings.

Culture: Fresh air entertainment

The town of Walchsee was once a farming community, and now its primary businesses take place in the great outdoors. It is no surprise then, that local customs and entertainment take place in the fresh Alpine air. The biggest event on the Walchsee calendar is the Kaiserwinkl Aplin Ballooning festival, which takes place every January. Locals and visitors gather to watch dozens of colourful hot air balloons ascend in to the blue winter sky, toasting their flights with a glass of local beer or schnapps.

Activities: Adventure central

Walchsee is the perfect place for adrenalin junkies or high-energy teens. The local ski resorts are extremely well kitted out for every winter sport imaginable, and there are on and off-piste slopes available for every level of ability. In the summer months, try swimming, sailing or water-skiing on the lake, or white water rafting in the surrounding rivers.
