While the city is thought to have been inhabited before the Romans came, it was an important place the Romans turned it into a spa named Aquae Sulis in 60 AD. Many battles have occurred here, and the city has been rebuilt many times, but it has always found its way back to its roots. On top of the baths, the 18th century saw the building of several theatres, and entertainment became extremely popular with residents and visitors. In the past few decades, preservation of Georgian homes and buildings has been a priority, leading to the town be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Location: 20 Kilometers South-East of Bristol

The city sits on the southern edge of a range of limestone hills called the Cotswolds. The center of the town is on top of the flood plain of Avon, and the river is now just a single channel thanks to modern technology. Geothermal springs are dotted throughout the area, created when rain falls on the Mendip Hills and percolates through limestone aquifers. The temperate climate leads to very mild and wet weather throughout the year, with the warmest months of the year reaching around 21 degrees Celcius.

    Business: Publishing, Software, and Service

Once only focused on manufacturing, the economy of Bath has become diversified in the last few years. The economy has a strong basis in the service industry as well as software and publishing. Education and health alone employ 30,000 people in the area, and retail and tourism offers 14,000 jobs. Two of the largest companies in town are Future Publishing and London and Country Mortgage Brokers.

Culture: World Renowned Theatre and Famous Artists

The city is home to five different theatres that attract internationally renowned companies and directors. Concerts, musicals, performances, and cinema are all possibilities for locals to enjoy. Art is also a huge part of culture and history, since Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Thomas Lawrence both worked and lived here in the 18th century. Even Jane Austen called the town home for a while, and the Jane Austen Centre is dedicated to the marvelous writer. Many art related events occur year round.

    Activities: Food, Sightseeing, and Sports

For those looking for something fun to do when visiting Bath, there are plenty of options. Try some Sally Lunn buns, the famous type of teacake made here, or Bath Oliver cookies. You can also watch or participate in one of the many popular sports, such as rugby, football (soccer), and cricket. However, the most amazing parts of the city are those that take you back to another era. Roman Baths tell of a time when Rome ruled, and old churches show what England looked like during the Georgian era.
