Known throughout France as 'La Belle au Bois Dormant', or the Sleeping Beauty, it was a former French Prime Minister who started the return to glory for Bordeaux. He brought in an impressive restoration package that within a few short years had garnered approval from the highest levels and in 2007, the city was given the UNESCO World Heritage Site seal of approval. Bordeaux is second only to Paris for the amount of historic monuments on its city streets and is classified as a 'City of Art and History' with some of the streets and buildings dating back to the Roman era. Even the wine here is historic with Bordeaux wines being produced here for over 800 years and known throughout the world for its quality and taste. It is for good reason it has been declared the world's capital city of wine.

Location: On the banks of the Garonne River

Not far from the beautiful Atlantic coastline of south-west France, Bordeaux straddles the Garonne River. The city's airport is only 10 kilometres away from the historic centre and can be reached by excellent public transport links. While driving around the city is possible, it can be frustrating with the many pedestrianized areas and one-way systems, so it may be best to leave that to the drivers with local knowledge.

Business: A wine trade of over 14.5 Billion euros annually

A booming centre for business and commerce, Bordeaux offers exhibition and conference venues for every occasion. With seven convention and exposition centres within the city limits, you have the widest choice of facilities to rival any city in the world. With hotels within walking distance and an excellent public transport system, Bordeaux has redefined how a city should treat its business travellers.

Culture: A city for all seasons

The city's architecture is among the most acclaimed in the world. The Esplanade des Quinconces at the heart of the Old Town is the largest square of its kind in Europe. The fountains, columns, and monuments found here display neoclassical elements in a magical setting that truly comes alive at night. A guided tour of the city is an experience to never forget as you take in historic buildings and concourses from the 11th century onwards.

Activities: A wine tasting like no other

If you have a few hours to spare and wish to try some of the best wines in the world, instead of heading to a local bistro why not try a 2-hour workshop at the Bordeaux Wine School. A fun experience to learn about the local vintages and the history behind the regions famous wines, it allows you a chance to discover the secrets of the harmony and blending of flavours that makes Bordeaux wines so successful.
