This charming Bavarian town is filled with palaces, parks and museums that detail the long and rich history of the town. Archeological evidence shows that settlers came to Aschaffenburg as far back as the Stone Age. The Frankish mayors chose to build a castle on the site of the Roman Castra, which is how the town became known as Aschaffenburg, or castle at the ash tree river. In the Middle Ages, Saint Boniface built a chapel to Saint Martin, as well as bringing in a Benedictine monastery, which helped to build the town. There are many beautiful historical buildings in town, including a replica of a Roman town house and the famous Schloss Johannisburg, which was built in the early 1600s.

Location: City on the Banks of the River Main

Located in northwest Bavaria, this city is about 41 kilometers southeast of Frankfurt. The River Main flows through the city, and the River Aschaff flows through the western part of the town. The city has regional and long distance InterCityExpress and InterCity train services, connecting it to the surrounding towns and the major cities in Germany. It is also easily accessed by automobile. The closest airport is Frankfurt.

Culture: Visit a Roman Town House Replica

There are many historical buildings in town, which tell the story of the city. The beautiful Schloss Johannisburg, which was built in the early 1600s in the late Renaissance style, towers over the town. It features the State Collections and a palace museum with important historical artifacts and artworks. A unique site in town is the Roman town house replica, Pompejanum, which was based upon a house found in Pompeii. The Stiftskirche Aschenburg was originally founded in 974, although most of the current building dates from the 12th century. It features important artworks and relics.

Activities: Gateway to the Spessart Hills

Aschaffenburg lies near the Spessart Hills, which provide picturesque landscapes perfect for hiking and cycling. There is also a forest nearby with many hiking trails, a perfect natural escape from the city. Residents and visitors alike enjoy traveling to the nearby Schonbusch palace, which features a large park with a maze, playgrounds, mini lakes, and canals. Another all in one park is the Grandmother Meadow, or Grossmutterwiese that has over 20,000 square meters of green space, making it the playground of the city.
