For over 40 years, people have been visiting the hot springs and relaxed in the warm waters of the spas and wellness centres of the town. The original engineers were searching for oil rumoured to be beneath the green fields. Instead, they found water, bursting from the ground at 70 degrees Celsius. At first, they were disappointed, but the idea grew about harnessing the therapeutic nature of the waters, and the first plans were drawn up in the early 1970's. The small town was built around the thermal waters, and the farmland was turned into a scenic location of swimming pools, golf courses, and nature trails.

Location: Surrounded by fertile farmland and gentle hills

Bad Birnbach is close to the German-Austrian border, 140 kilometres to the east of Munich International Airport. The surrounding countryside is full of endless fields and gentle hills that draw your eyes to the mountain ranges in the distance. Getting here is simple with the good road links and a regular bus service to and from the nearest towns and cities.

Business: Made for relaxation

The local economy is geared towards tourism and leisure. With the introduction of the Rottal Terme complex, the town has almost doubled in size and can provide accommodation for almost 5,000 visitors at a time. There is also a state accredited school for health professionals to acquire certification in physical therapy, massage and other medical rehabilitation services.

Culture: Do not miss out on a visit to the church

The Church of the Assumption was originally built in 1483, and some elements remain from this era—even though it had to be restored in 1675 after a fire caused extensive damage. The church contains many Gothic and Baroque styles of architecture, and especially impressive is the High Altar. The tower that looks out over the town was added in 1828.

Activities: You are truly spoilt for choice

Bad Birnbach is well known for the rejuvenation properties of the warm pools and thermal lakes, but the resort also offers many other activities. Golfers will delight in the 18-hole 'Bella Vista' course, where you will take as many shots with your camera as you will with your putter. The networks of paths and trails that cover the area are a haven for walkers and hikers, and include a 50-kilometre Nordic walking park that has been used by athletes in training for the Olympics. There is also an extensive network of cycle paths where you can get your legs and heart pumping on some challenging steep hills. Or you simply relax and take it easy on the riverside routes that have easy gradients, and take in some wonderful scenery.
