This year round spa resort is surrounded by seven valleys of the famous Black Forest mountain range. Hidden away in the folds of the hills, Bad Herrenalb offers a place for relaxation and recovery from the stresses and strains of everyday life. A former religious settlement of Benedictine nuns and Cistercian monks, it was founded in the 12th Century, but has evolved over the ages into a sophisticated town of over 7,000 inhabitants. The main well was sunk in 1971, but the town has been promoting the benefits of the local waters since 1841, when a cold-water therapy institute was built. It now attracts day visitors to the many health spas from nearby Karlsruhe and Stuttgart who take advantage of its proximity and good transport links.

Location: A beautiful setting in the Black Forest

Just 30 kilometres from Karlsruhe and 55 kilometres from Stuttgart with its international airport. Almost hidden away in the northern reaches of the Black Forest lies this beautiful little spa town. It is served by a delightful, electric tram that uses the old railway connection to Karlsruhe. Taking only around 30 minutes, this journey through the lush, tree-lined hills to reach the city is popular with visitors and locals alike. The town is also easy to reach by car, and if you are travelling from the nearest airport at Stuttgart, it will take you just over one hour in normal traffic to reach.

Culture: Take a trip to the religious buildings and ruins

The old convent ruins are just outside the town, but are well worth the walk on an easy trail through the hills. The convent was founded in the 12th Century and completely rebuilt in 1696 with a Baroque church attached. The monastery, also founded in the same era, is in a further state of ruin, but the renovated Abbey church, built in the 18th Century, is a fine building with Romanesque elements to be found within.

Activities: Climb, hike, cycle, and relax

The Black Forest is a region of wonderful trails and hikes that are well signposted and offer challenges to all levels of ability. There are easy circular routes that take just a few hours to multi-day trips that require overnight stops and careful planning. Rock climbers will head for the Falkenfelsen, which overlooks the town and offers some interesting routes to the top of the 61-metre high, granite cliff face. When you have had a hard day out amongst the hills, head back to a spa, and massage and soak the aches and pains away, before experiencing some of the best local food the region has to offer.
