The bridge houses that cross the Nahe River as it flows through Bad Kreuznach are one of the main tourist attractions of this extremely pretty and ancient city, but don't stop there when you visit. Did you know the story of Dr. Faust was based on the true story about the head of the Bad Kreuznach School over 500 years ago? The city also has a unique feature, being the largest open-air, brine fogger inhalation spa in Europe that is purported to ease a range of illnesses and complaints from respiratory illness to eye problems. As is the case with all spa towns, there is a lot of Roman history for you to explore, not just in the museums, but in the architecture and sculptures that you will find as you walk around the streets.

Location: The home of Riesling wine

Situated at the conjunction of the rivers Ellerbach and Nahe, Bad Kreuznach has always had travellers passing through for as long as there has been habitation on their banks. It is the district seat of the Rhineland-Palatinate, and the cultural, administrative, and economic hub of the region that is named after it. It has been an important area since Roman times, with luxurious villas and palaces built here at this strategic location.

Business: Annual expo for the construction industry

Visitors coming to the city for the annual exhibition and conferences on the construction trade will find a wide range of hotels to suit every budget. The building fair takes place in the Pfingstwiese each October, and presents the complete range of topics for all construction business professionals.

Culture: Roman spa town famous for its bridge houses

The picturesque bridge houses are probably the most photographed buildings in the city. The bridge with its eight arches that span the Nahe was built in the 13/14th Century, and the houses are dated from the late 1400s onwards. With their exposed wooden beams and buttresses, they look precariously perched on the bridge. It is hard to believe they have been there for over 500 years.

Activities: Take advantage of the refreshing air

Being a spa town means that many of the local activities are based around relaxation and recuperation, but that should not stop you from getting out seeing the wonders that encompass the city. Discover the Nahe valley wine region, home to the Riesling and Müller-Thurgau grape varieties, take a hiking tour around rich, fertile area, or—if you are feeling adventurous—try out the high-wire climbing park at the Kuhberg leisure park.
