Bad Saarow – Enjoying “state spa” status since 1923
Location: Easily accessible, and only a short trip from Berlin
Born from glacial activity millennia in the past, the waters of Scharmützel Lake feed the spas of Bad Saarow, a popular resort in the Federal State of Brandenburg about a half hour west of the Polish border. Just an hour’s drive south of Berlin, motorists traveling on the A 12 will turn south at the city of Fürstenwalde, about ten kilometers north of Bad Saarow. By train, you’ll arrive at the station in Pieskow, the city’s older section. On the lake, there’s a shuttle that ferries visitors to neighboring Wendisch Rietz–a popular resort to the south–and back.
Business: In the health industry since the 1800s
While people have known of Bad Saarow’s healing waters and mud since the 14th century, it’s only since the late 1800’s that it has achieved true popularity, culminating with its official designation as a state spa in 1923. The city’s principle commodity is therefore, good health, and “Gesundheit” isn’t anything to sneeze at here. Nestled in the hills of the Rauener Berge and Dubrower Berge, its fresh air and access to the Catherinequelle spring make it a veritable gold mine for tourism.
Culture: From little-known site to full-blown resort
Before the first efforts at development, there was little in Bad Saarow except its healing waters and mineral muds. With help from a writer of the day, Theodor Fontane, planners began to take interest in the town. An early colony in 1907, designed by the prominent garden architect Ludwig Lesser, was the first inroad. A water tower–now a landmark–was erected a year later, followed shortly thereafter by a bathhouse, thus taking the shape of the resort it was to become. In the 1920s, it became the resort of choice for Berlin’s elite.
Activities: Segway to fun in Bad Saarow
Without a doubt, Bad Saarrow’s healthy water and mud are the magnet for visitors to this charming resort on the Scharmützel Lake with two spas standing out among others: Saarow Therme and the HELIOS-Klinik hospital, both offering a variety of treatments in an atmosphere that’s at once therapeutic and elegant. But for fresh air, there’s nothing like a good game of golf. With three golf courses, including one designed by Arnold Palmer, you can tee-up to good health while perfecting your swing! Book a cruise, or whisk around the wooded landscape on an upright Segway vehicle.
