Bad Windsheim – Discover 700 years of History in this Fascinating Spa Town
Location: Green scenery within easy-reaching distance
Nestled into the far north-west corner of Bavaria, Bad Windsheim is just a one hour train ride from nearby Nuremburg, and a 25-kilometer drive from Rothenburg ob der Tauber. With an excellent artery of roadways in all directions, the spa town is easily accessed by car and bicycle together with a regular rail schedule.
Business: Executive getaway
Bad Windsheim is a sleepy town and better suited for business executives intending to escape the office rather than looking for lucrative contracts. The Frankentherme with its night sauna and bathing halls is the main attraction, and a full menu of unisex spa treatments is available for you to indulge in.
Culture: A step back in time
The open-air Freilandmuseum has retained the town’s medieval past and gives visitors insight to Franconian life during the Middle-Ages—even farmhouses and shops have been restored alongside the customary machinery and barns. There are several historic buildings around the old market square, including the Imperial Museum, which was once the granary; the pick of the apples is the Town Hall, or the “Rathaus” as they say in German.
Activities: Sample wine cellars fit for a king
Visitors to Bad Windsheim really should call in at the Weinstube, a 14th Century wine cellar that has lost nothing of it characters and offers flavorsome tipples. The wine cellar was a favorite hangout of King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden during his visit to Bavaria in 1632, and it continues to draw the crowds. A visit to the spa is a given, and you may want to check out the sprawling park, but why not take an aerial view and admire the enchanting scene from a hot-air balloon.
