The capital of Germany's largest island was founded in 1168 when a convent was built. The surviving church of St Mary is the oldest building on the island and the centre of the old town that sprung up around it. It caters for many visitors who come to Rügen for its fine white Baltic Sea beaches, and to enjoy the history of the towns and the island. In recent years, the original causeway connecting the island to the mainland became very congested with visiting vehicles, and a second crossing was built to alleviate the pressure. With beautiful vistas and an exceptional bird sanctuary at the Nonnensee lake, it is a town for lovers of nature as well as of history.

Location: Off the coast of Stralsund in north-east Germany

Connected to the mainland by a rail bridge, two road causeways, and a regular ferry service visitors have a variety of options when visiting Bergen auf Rügen. The town is found in the east of the island, and borders the sheltered Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden lagoon, and is only a few kilometres from the sandy beach at Prora to the east. International travellers will probably arrive via Rostock-Laage Airport, 100 kilometres west, and complete the journey to the island via the rail links or by hired car along the A20 Autobahn and E251 to Stralsund.

Business: Hotels with excellent facilities

The hotels on the island offer a range of choices for business meetings and events. The largest has a capacity for over 300 people at a time with full catering facilities if required. The island has good communication links, and all areas of the town are easily accessible on foot, by road, or even by the limited service narrow gauge railway.

Culture: Unearth the story of the town in the museum

The city's museum is located in the courtyard of the former monastery, in a finely restored building of the 16/17th century. It chronicles the town’s history with artefacts and exhibitions from the Stone Age until the founding of the Abbey in 1168 on the ground floor, and on the upper level, it displays the history of the remaining years to present. It is continuously expanding its exhibits with finds from the area and donations from the general public.

Activities: Enjoy a trip around the coastline

Whether you travel by foot, on horseback, or by sea, a trip around the coastline of the island is one of breathtaking scenery and some great architectural delights. The chalk cliffs offer some of the finest walking areas and are the landmark of the island. A sailing boat with a guide can be hired to show these towering cliffs from the sea. If you wish to be a little more active as you see the sights, take a trip to the Heritage Centre, where a feat of engineering ingenuity has created an open walkway that towers over the trees to a height of 82 metres above sea level, and gives you an eagle’s eye view of the island.
