A city since the first century AD, historical Konstanz became important as the only bridge crossing the Rhine River. Because of its neutral status during World War II, many of the original buildings and landmarks from when it was settled by the Romans remained intact. This makes it a popular destination for visitors who like to see how people used to live in a different age of humanity. Once a trade and spiritual center, its main purpose is the home of the University of Konstanz, known for a library containing around two million books. This elite university also has a botanical garden for students to relax and clear their heads in.

Location: On the Border of Two Countries

Situated on Lake Constance, this German town also has part of the Rhine River running through it, causing the town to be split in two pieces connected by a bridge. On one side of the bridge is the historical part of the city and on the other side lie the industrial and residential areas. Ferries and a shuttle service make getting around the area very convenient, and Switzerland is just a walk away with part of the city being located partially in the other country's territory.

Culture: See, Hear, and Relax While Getting an Education

Konstanz is a safe and quiet college town with plenty to see and do. Music is very popular, and those who like to hear the superior sounds of classical music can visit the Southwest German Philharmonic Orchestra or the Cathedral for organ concerts. Continuing with the popularity of the arts is the Konstanz Theatre, containing a youth and a puppet theatre for visitors and residents to enjoy. After a long day at school, students can travel to the Lake Constance Thermal Spa, a state-of-the-art spa with saunas, pools, and a restaurant.

Activities: Experience the Rich History at Every Corner

By far, one of the most amazing parts of Konstanz is the fact that so many traditional landmarks and buildings remain intact. One place containing many such sites is the Niederburg District; the oldest part of the city. Narrow streets are lined with several buildings around 700 years old. Visitors can also enjoy taking a boat trip on Lake Constance to see many of the surrounding sites, including the Rhine.
