Though quiet Cuxhaven has long been a center for fishing and shipping, it's also a haven for peace and relaxation in Germany's North Sea region. Ships on their way to Hamburg and the Kiel Canal find its port a welcome way station on their journey. A go-to destination for tourists looking for a quiet, coastal environment, this seaside burg is also at the cutting edge of wind technology, with turbines harvesting the ocean breeze offshore. Its inhabitants are proud of their generations-old link to the sea, a legacy represented by the symbol of the Kugelbake, a wooden beacon on the city's shoreline. There is lots to see and do, and lots of fresh seafood waiting for you to enjoy!

Location: A beacon by the Elbe and the North Sea

Like a sentinel overlooking two important bodies of water, the busy town is in the upper region of Germany on the North Sea, about a three-hour drive from the border with Denmark. It also sits at the mouth of the Elbe River and is, as one would expect, a major center for shipping and fishing. The city is the seat of the Lower Saxony's Cuxhaven District and is accessible by car, rail, and sea.

Business: A busy harbor town, from its wharf to its wind turbines.

A defining feature of the town and a key to its major commerce is the fisherman's wharf. Cuxhaven is a point of registration for shipping in the area. Its strategic location makes it an established stopover for ships headed to Hamburg or the Kiel Canal. Constant breezes from the sea put it at the cutting edge of wind energy, with giant turbines rising from the waters offshore. Supplying the needs of this new industry are offshoot companies who provide engineering, researching, and servicing for this budding industry. Shipping and tourism are, however, the principle economic sectors.

Culture: Ships and tourists guided by Cuxhaven's trusted beacon

Cuxhaven's history and culture is centered on the sea. Before 1937, when it became independent, it was part of Hamburg. You know you're in Cuxhaven when you see the town's official symbol: the Kugelbake, a beacon that once functioned as a lighthouse and that is now a landmark on the shore. Cuxhaven is laid back and peaceful. It is, in fact, somewhere to get away; a place apart where one can relax and re-energize.

Activities: Snag some fish, photograph, or get some peace of mind in charming Cuxhaven

Because Cuxhaven is a fishing town, you can expect the freshest fish possible. Make your way to the harbor and the fish market, and visit the fish auction. Stop by the Kurpark and Fort Kugelbake. Take pictures of the local wildlife at the sea lion pool and the feathered inhabitants at bird meadow of the zoo, which is also in the Kurpark. A total of 107 eateries offer anything the heart desires, from seafood to meat and vegetarian options.
