Location: A small town off the beaten track, offering big town fun

Dinkelsbühl is a historic town in Bavaria, about halfway between Nuremberg and Stuttgart. It stands at the junction of two old Roman trading routes, north-south from Germany to Italy and east-west from the towns of the Rhine towards Eastern Europe. The town affords excellent transport links with easy access to major regional highways, making it quick and easy to escape to this countryside retreat.

Culture: A medieval gem in the heart of Bavaria

The old town is dominated by the majestic St. George's Gothic Minster, which dates back to the 15th century. It stands at the historic heart of the town. Climb its tower to get an impressive view across the town and region. Dinkelsbühl also boasts a castle with a Rococo chapel, and the timbered building Deutsches Haus, which was the ancestral home of the Counts of Drechsel-Deufstetten. This is an excellent example of German Renaissance-style wood architecture. The history museum is also worth a visit.

Activities: A wildlife haven in a charming tranquil setting

The town is located on the River Wörnitz, a tributary of the River Danube, providing an oasis for lovers of the outdoors. Take a swim in the river pool whilst admiring the view of the impressive old town. Altmuehl Lake provides a haven for water sports enthusiasts. Forming part of the Bavarian Lake District, it is made up of many tiny islands with nature reserves, where you can go in search of over 200 bird species. Enjoy hiking or cycling, passing Roman watchtowers and valleys full of fossils. For those who are looking for some action-packed fun on the water, there is canoeing, sailing, and windsurfing on offer. The town is also situated on the famous scenic holiday route Romantic Road, which loosely follows the old Roman trade routes. This is a magnet for walkers and cyclists who can discover Pilgrim churches enroute.
