This city was once known from 889 under the name of Esginga, until it got its modern name in 1292. In the 1990s, the U.S. Air Force had a contingency hospital in town, and the French maintained barracks there as well. Today, it is a small town of 21,000 residents with a relatively booming economy. It is the home of two professional training schools, one for mainly business and the other for home economics and business. Other colleges include one for nursing and another for agriculture. The city is, however, best known for a large annual music festival since the 1920s.

Location: German Town in the Black Forest

This safe town lies in the Baar basin, surrounded by low mountainous terrain where two rivers meet. These two rivers, the Breg and Brigach, are the source tributaries for the Danube, which is where the town gets its name. Lake Titisee is also close by, and both Switzerland and France are only about an hour's drive away.

Business: Machine Assembly and Rail Hub

This regional rail hub has four rail lines join in town; two of which are specially constructed to handle the rough terrain of the Black Forest. The economy is based mostly on industry, but consists of around 1,000 enterprises. Machine assembly takes the lead in employment along with shoe manufacturing, magnetics, and semiconductors.

Culture: The World's Oldest Festival for New Music

Donaueschingen is most known for the Donaueschingen Festival, which was founded in 1921. It is the world's oldest festival for contemporary music, and takes place in October. Some past guests include Elliot Carter, Paul Hindemith, and John Cage. There are also many museums depicting the city's history and art collections. One such museums is the Museum Biedermann for contemporary art, which is located in a neo-classical building. Those who enjoy learning how things are made can take a guided brewery tour through the Brewery Museum, where one of the first Pilsner beers was brewed in Germany.

Activities: Museums and Athletic Recreation

The history of Germany and this area can be explored in every way through the many museums and cultural sites in the city. The Guild Museum features carnival figures and costumes, tracking the history from ancient to contemporary. The Child and Youth Museum is perfect for families, as children are allowed to discover all about the world around them through interactive exhibits in science, nature, and technology. Recreation is king, though, in Donaueschingen. Cycling is a major form of athletic hobby for residents with many trails going all around the Danube area, and the Black Forest terrain makes a perfect place to hike. For those looking for a unique recreational experience, the city also offers plenty of places to try your hand at golf, archery, geocaching, swimming, and Nordic walking.
