A hotel in Frechen, a town in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany, places you just 21km from the beautiful city of Cologne. The town itself is ancient, with the earliest records of it dating as far back as the year 877. Known since the 16th century for its signature bearded pottery, called Bartmannkrug (or, bearded man jug) and other ceramics, Frechen is a charming town. The Bartmannkrug were popular around the world, particularly with the British and the Dutch, and today you can see examples of these unusual creations in Frechen's Keramikmuseum.

What makes Frechen special?

Frechen is known as quite an unusual town, and its attractions are an interesting mix. Many contemporary artists call Frechen home, attracted by its varied modern architecture. Some of the town's points of interest include Saint Audomar church and a Jewish cemetery with graves dating from the 18th century to the 1930s. The town is also home to large quartz works and lignite factories.

What are the business interests of the region?

Local businesses in Frechen are still today based on ceramics. However, there are also the aforementioned quartz and lignite production plants. And of course, many prominent organisations are based in Cologne, a mere 15km away and easily reached by the S-bahn. The Rhineland has always had a strong trade and industrial background, dominated today by the motor industry and the chemical sector. In addition, Cologne is a renowned centre for research, particular in the fields of medicine and biotechnology.

Where should I spend free time outside my hotel in Frechen?

If you choose to stay at a hotel in Frechen, there are plenty of indoor and outdoor activities available to you. The indoor climbing centre, Chimpanzodrome, lets you get in an unusual workout, while Erlebnisbad offers total relaxation via its indoor pools, waterfall, and saunas. For a laid-back afternoon out, engage in the local traditions at Keramion, a pottery museum where you can try your own hand at ceramics in one of their popular classes. Or take the 15 minute train ride into nearby Cologne, and check out the famous Gothic Cologne Cathedral, visit the Cologne Zoological Gardens, complete with elephant park and jungle house, or just stroll through this relaxed west German city.
