Garmisch-Partenkirchen was once two distinct market towns, but when it was host to the 1936 Winter Olympics, the two were joined. However, the two areas remain separated by the Parnach River and a train station, and they have maintained their unique culture and identity. Partenkirchen offers quiet walks among the historical Bavarian gasthaus buildings. Garmisch is home to the livelier nightlife and après-ski-based tourism. Today, visitors come to the resort town to enjoy its many outdoor activities and opportunities for winter sports. The picturesque resort town is also home to a first-class climatic health resort that offers people the opportunity to unwind year-round.

Location: Come by Train to see the Highest German Mountain

The Bavarian resort town is located in the Oberbayern region of southern Germany on the Austrian border. It is near Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany. The railway comes through the town, and it is the terminus of two railway lines. Regional services run often to Munich, Mittenwald, Reutte, and Innsbruck. During certain seasons, special long-distance services run to Berlin, Hamburg, Bremen, and Dortmund. The Federal Highway 2 also serves the area.

Business: International Education and Winter Sports

Garmisch-Partenkirchen is home to the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies, which is an internationally funded learning and conference center that mainly hosts governments from around the world, especially from Eastern Europe. The American Armed Forces Recreation Centers serve U.S. and NATO military and families. The town also has the largest specialized center for pediatric and adolescent rheumatology. One of the main industries of the area is tourism, especially for skiing and other winter sports.

Culture: Enjoy Rich Traditional Bavarian Culture and Food

People have lied in this area for millennia, and there is the Werdenfels Museum displaying artifacts from the past 2,000 years. In town, the Richard Strauss Institute hosts concerts and educational lectures. There are many restaurants and gasthauses featuring traditional Bavarian fare. The Ludwigstrasse features many boutique shops and restaurants. A small castle, the King's House on Schachen, is located near the resort town and features a botanical garden.

Activities: Hiking and Skiing among the Bavarian Alps

Outdoor activities make up the majority of activities in this resort area. There are numerous ski runs and lifts to enjoy, including the famous Kandahar and the glacial plateau of Zugspitze. During winter, visitors can enjoy cross-country skiing and snowshoeing through the forests and meadows. There is also sledding. Visitors also enjoy hiking the Bavarian Alps, the Partnachklamm gorge, and other nearby trails year round.
