Hanau has a rich history dating back to the first castle that was built overlooking the River Kinzig in 1143. Over the ensuing years, it was repeatedly fortified. Napoleon ordered the battlements to be destroyed, which opened up the town for the expansion we see in modern times. In 1813, the Battle of Hanau took place on the city limits; it would prove to be the last victory for the Emperor on German soil. The town is proud of its association with the Grimm Brothers, and many buildings and streets are named in their honour. An annual Grimm festival that is celebrated between May and July. Close to Frankfurt, it attracts many families who wish to live outside the city yet have an easy commute to the workplace.

It attracts visitors to parks, museums, and medieval streets.
