Herford – A town of diverse cultural attractions
Location: In the north-east of North Rhine-Westphalia
Herford can be found in North Rhine-Westphalia in northern Germany. The city has an extensive bus network, and is bicycle and pedestrian-friendly. There are numerous ways to arrive. If flying, the airports of Hanover, Münster, and Paderborn are all within 100 km. The town is served by the Herford train station and can be reached by car via the A2 motorway.
Business: Textiles, furniture, plastics, and engineering
The economy of the area is supported by its strong industries. Textiles, furniture, mechanical engineering, and plastics make up the bulk of large businesses in the area, which is home to companies such as Bugatti, Poggenpohl Furniture, and Heinze Plastics Technology. Many of the conferences and exhibitions here take place in the town’s city hall.
Culture: Historic buildings, art museums, and festivals
Cultural attractions are plentiful in and around the city. Along with the Herford Minster, there are a number of historic buildings to see, including St. Jacob’s, St. John’s and St. Mary’s churches, all built in the Gothic style. However, the most popular attraction might be the MARTa Museum, a modern art museum designed by the famed architect Frank Gehry, his only structure in Germany. The town hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year, celebrating jazz music, wine, and various holidays.
