Kehl has a rich, interesting history, having been part of France in the 17th century when it was annexed to Strasbourg. It only returned to Germany in 1953. The town still enjoys both German and French influences. It therefore unites the intimacy of small-town Baden-Württemberg, but visitors can also savor its mix of French city influences. The first bridge at this point of the river was erected in the 14th century. The Jardin des Deux Rives straddles both sides of the river. This is perfect for an evening stroll along the majestic Rhine. If you are looking for a quiet location, but still want the convenience of being near a larger city and a vast array of activities, then look no further.

Location: The beauty of the Rhine coupled with a rich history

Kehl is located in south-west Germany on the river Rhine, on the border with France. The cosmopolitan city of Strasbourg on the opposite bank is within easy reach by the Pont de l'Europe footbridge. Kehl radiates a small-town feel, yet offers everything in the way of peace and tranquility on its doorstep. It also benefits from the comforts and conveniences of the nearby French city of Strasbourg. Via the European Routes E52 and E35, all major cities in south-west Germany and in eastern France are conveniently reachable from here.

Culture: A melting pot of serenity and beauty

Steeped in history, the town provides a multitude of squares and historic buildings for culture aficionados. The area around the Rhine is a sanctuary of wildlife with its nature reserve and promenade walk along the Old Rhine. This forms the original course of the river Rhine and now serves as an arm to the current course of the river.

Activities: Fun for everyone, whether slow or fast-paced

Escape from everyday life with a stroll along the Rhine Promenade or through the park that runs along both sides of the river. While away the hours with a stroll down the pedestrianized zone in the center of the town, and saunter amongst the many street cafés on offer. The nearby Rheinau Forest, which forms part of the celebrated Black Forest, offers a vast network of cycle paths as well as wild swimming in the multitude of old gravel pits. On top of that, Kehl is home to numerous landmark buildings, such as the Weißtannenturm tower and the astonishing bridge Passerelle des deux Rives.
