The first documented mention of the city came in 1259. The name of the town is said to have come from the largest landowner in the village whose family originally came in 800 to came to the river to farm. They remained landowners until they began selling off rights to their monastery and land. The last part was sold in 1580. Prince Johann Friedrich von Braunschweig-Calenberg was given the area as thanks for helping in the capture of another German city in the 17th century, and he decided to give villagers special rights. They were allowed to hunt in the many forests surrounding the area and thrived. City rights were received in the mid-20th century, and from then on the city merged with many other smaller municipalities to form what it is today. The population has grown to over 40, 000, and residents enjoy working for the pension department of the government, retail shops, or the local hospital.

Location: In the Hanover Region

This small town is in Lower Saxony and is part of the Hanover region. Both Kronsberg and Bockmerholz are located to the west of the town, which hold the largest forest area in this part of Germany. Hanover itself is just a few kilometers to the north offering big city amenities within reach of this small, close-knit community. This area is broken down into several districts known as boroughs. There are six districts.

Culture: Religious and Historical Sites

One of the most iconic historical places to visit in Laatzen is the Old Chapel, This church was built in the early 14th century. That makes it the oldest building in the town. The bell has been restored but was once rung by hand, and a new window depicts beautiful religious art. It is still in its original brick art style. There are many other historic churches here as well such as St. Nicolas Parish Church with its lovely grounds and statues. For a deeper look into history, visit the Aviation Museum Laatzen-Hannover. It is an amazing testament to the history of aviation with 36 aircraft and 30 piston engines. Some of the most interesting exhibits include "Daredevil Pilots" and "Women in Aviation."
