A city known for its remarkable fortification, Lahnstein is a charming and well-preserved testament to its complicated past. Complete with castles, cathedrals, churches, and defence towers, the city seems to pulse with a medieval heartbeat. The many guided boat and museum tours offer visitors a first-hand glimpse at the area’s rich history, while the scenic river landscape and wooded areas appeal to the explorer eager to escape to the peace and tranquillity of the countryside by bike or on foot. Spend an unforgettable stay in the ancient city, and get to know Germany from a quite serene point of view.

Location: The centre of two cities and two rivers

Part of the Rhine Lahn district, Lahnstein is located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of south-western Germany. The city is situated at the juncture of the Lahn and Rhine Rivers, and sits atop the foothills at the base of the Westerwald and Taunus mountain ranges. The town received its name in 1969, when the two independent towns—Oberlahnstein and Niederlahnstein—merged.

Culture: A history of fortification

Lahnstein’s history is visible on every corner in the many castles, ancient town halls, defence towers, and famous taverns that decorate the area. Once heavily fortified from attack on the Rhine River in the 1300s, the city features the remains of the 16 defence towers built along its fortification wall, which is now considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Four distinguished museums document the town’s carnival celebrations, its mining industry, its hydropower plant, and its history with medieval fortification and WWI French occupation. The beautiful Lahneck and Martinsschloss Castles are testament to the town’s impressive dedication to fortification.

Activities: Boat and castle tours along the Rhine

Lahnstein has an abundance of sightseeing opportunities along the Rhine River. Visitors can explore the many small villages and castles that line the riverbank, as well as the famous Tavern on the Lahn, an inn where German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote some of his best works. Boat tours along the river offer views of the Westerwald and Taunus mountains, while the many churches like St. John’s Abbey and Parish Church of Santa Barbara showcase the city’s Romanesque and neo-gothic style architecture. For a closer look at the natural beauty along the Rhine, visitors can hike the Ruppertsklamm gorge or cycle through Lahn Valley and take in the scenery.
