A sunny and laid-back mountainous getaway in the south of Germany, Oberstdorf combines modern accessibility with rustic old-world charm and the preservation of genuine Alpine customs. A stream of visitors from Germany and beyond arrives throughout the year, taking advantage of the shifting outdoors offerings while soaking in the winter saunas or the mud spas of summer. Recreation seekers will know the town as a major ski and ice skating hub, and host of the initial segment of the famous Four Hills Tournament each year, but you don’t need to be a thrill seeker to appreciate Oberstdorf. Switch yourself off, soak up the mountain traditions, and unwind.

Location: A Quiet Paradise Nestled in the Mountains

Oberstdorf sits high in the Bavarian Alps, along the Lech and Iller rivers in the German region of Allgäu. Located right along the Austrian border, the town hosts the southernmost point in all of Germany. A beautiful setting in the picturesque mountains makes it a popular destination for skiers, hikers, and all other manners of adventure seekers. Access is easy, even at this altitude: Memmingen Airport is roughly 60 kilometers to the north, and the town is well connected to Germany’s excellent rail system, with trains arriving frequently from cities including Munich and Ulm.

Business: Traditional Production and Modern Visitors

While this magnificent village sees its fair share of tourists on holiday, its economy is not solely based in hospitality. The local farmers are hard at work, producing delicious milk and incredible aromatic cheese – local cattle have access to beautiful, relaxing views and as many as 70 different herbs and grasses to graze upon, providing a flavor that is unmatched elsewhere in the world.

Culture: A Regional Way of Life

Oberstdorf features many of the traditions shared across borders between the various Alpine villages. Festivals, folklore, and customary clothing are found all around. When you’re done admiring the local flavor, kick back in one of the town’s spas or outdoors with a full view of the mountain peaks – and don’t skip the local cuisine, from sausages to sweet and nutty cheeses.

Activities: The Natural Bounty of the Alps

This town is the definition of an Alpine retreat, and those with outdoorsy interests and an appreciation for nature will never feel more at home than right here in Oberstdorf. Skiers flock to the slopes year-round – even in summer, innovative plastic mats placed on ski jumps allow the fun to continue. Hiking is available at every turn for explorer types, while adrenaline junkies can experience the thrills of the Söllereckrodel Allgäu Coaster or the breathtaking sights and altitude of the high-ropes courses.
