This historical city has been occupied since the Bronze Age, and it was even part of the Magna Germania. It is believed that the original city was founded in the 7th century by the Hevelli tribe. For much of its early history, it remained a small market town but eventually became the hunting residence of Frederick William I., Elector of Brandenburg in 1660. Prussian barracks were built here soon after. As the city grew, it became a hot spot for immigrants searching for freedom, and even the Prussian royal family found it tempting enough to make it their permanent residence. Twice it has been the provincial capital of Brandenburg.

Location: Bordering Germany's Capital of Berlin

The land where the city sits was originally formed by large moraines left after the last glacial period. Today, it is mostly made up of green space with 20 lakes and rivers. The city has been divided into nine new villages and seven historic districts. Located in the north-eastern part of the country, it is also in the state of Brandenburg. On the River Havel, it is conveniently 24 kilometers from the Berlin city center.

Culture: The Babelsberg Filmpark, Museums, and World Heritage Sites

Potsdam is perhaps most known for Babelsberg, a major film production studio before the World Wars. It enjoys a growing success as a major European film production center, and is the oldest studio of its kind in the world. For an all-in-one experience, head to Sanssouci Park, which houses a botanical garden, four royal palaces, Roman baths, and even a Chinese tea house. Just north of the city center lies Alexandrowka, a colony where Russian immigrants lived. It contains many buildings built in the Russian architectural style. Lastly, those who are a fan of science and Albert Einstein will enjoy the Einstein Tower and the Albert Einstein Science Park, which include an astronomy compound.

Activities: A water rat’s dream

A series of interconnected lakes running through this historical German town provide a beautiful view and the chance to partake in water sports and get closer to nature. Sports lovers will be thrilled to know that visiting this town doesn't mean giving up on their pastime. Among the many local teams is the female football club Turbine Potsdam, one of the most successful in the country, as well as a rugby union. There is even an Olympic training center in town for aspiring professional athletes. However, the most popular thing that tourists do here is go on a sightseeing tour. The town is full of amazing attractions, such as the Dutch Quarter and the Old Market Square.
