Recklinghausen - An iconic city in the making
Location: Recklinghausen–a rural oasis
Recklinghausen is situated in the middle of a largely agricultural area in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. It is surrounded by countryside, but within easy driving distance from the major cities of Dusseldorf, Essen, Dortmund and Munster. It is just 80 km south of the border with The Netherlands, with excellent connections by road and by train.
Business: Agriculture and industry
The city itself is incredibly self-sufficient and affluent, with a strong retail sector and excellent cultural facilities. However, traditionally Recklinghausen has a reputation as a trade hub for the local farming community and the industrial businesses, which operate on the outskirts of the city. The city’s proximity to many of North Germany’s most prominent cities means that Recklinghausen is seen as a popular secondary business hub in the area.
Culture: A theatrical hub
Recklinghausen is famous for its grand main theatre, the Ruhrfestspielhaus, which hosts the top-billed plays and performances of the annual Ruhrfestspiele. There are a scattering of smaller theatres and theatrical venues in and around the city centre, cementing Recklinghausen’s reputation as a centre for the dramatic arts.
Activities: Explore the countryside
The vast countryside around Recklinghausen is perfect for hiking and nature walks, although you may need to check with the locals before crossing private land. Within the city itself, there is the usual array of health clubs and sports facilities, but first time visitors should begin their trip by walking around the historic city centre and take in all the sights and sounds.
