Rüdesheim - A place to see the Wine Queen and her princesses
Location: Dipping its toes in the waters of the Rhine
The Rhine River slowly flows by the town as it makes the journey towards the majestic Lorelei. It is only 54 kilometres from Frankfurt Airport to the east with good connecting rail and road links offering very easy access. If you arrive via Hahn Airport, be aware that you must take the ferry at Bingen to make the trip across the Rhine into the town.
Culture: All things wine
The wines created by the surrounding vineyards are some of the best quality in the world, producing the classic Riesling and the Pinot Noir. Wine tours and tastings are readily available all year round from the 380 winemakers of the region in either their vineyards or their wine taverns in the town centre. The surrounding area with Gothic castles and towers looking down onto the Rhine is a fairy-tale landscape that captures the imagination and draws you in. Many of these buildings are open to the public to show their history and art to all.
Activities: Boats, trains, and chairlifts
A boat trip along the Rhine River, with live music softly playing in the background as the sun sets, is just a magical experience. If you want a closer look at the vineyards and countryside, try the 'land train' of the Winegrower's Express (Winzerexpress) that will take you on a guided tour of the area with full commentary from an expert along the route. As well as the spectacular cable car, the town has a chairlift system where you can sit in the open air as you ascend the steep slopes of the Niederwald Forest to reach the Wildlife Park and Hunting Lodge (Jagdschloss) situated at the top of the hill. You can combine all three in one go and enjoy a spectacular day out using an inexpensive 'Ring Ticket' available from the town's information centres.
