The town was first seen in written history during the middle of the 8th century, but many findings have shown people have lived here since the Stone Age. The city passed from the diocese of Worms to the Counts of Palatinate in early years. The famous moated castle was built sometime in the 14th century, and was home to many nobles over time. The 17th century saw Schwetzingen developed into a baroque city, and the area was finally absorbed into the Grand Duchy of Baden in the early 19th century. By the end of the 1900s, it was famous for its cultivation of asparagus as well as its canneries and cigar factories that became important to the country.

Location: In the North-West of Baden-Württemberg

Just 10 kilometers south-west of Heidelberg and 15 kilometers south-east of Mannheim is in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis district. It is within the plain of the Rhine River to the west of the Oldenwald region. A small stream that joins the Rhine runs through the city; it is called the Leimbach. There are three major theme routes running through the town that are part of scenic byways that thousands of people travel through each year.

Culture: Historic Churches and a Palace

There are three historic churches in Schwetzingen, including St. Pancratius Catholic Church built in 1736. The Protestant Church was built in 1756 and expanded upon in 1884. However, the Schwetzingen Palace by far is the must-see here. It dates back to 1350, and was altered to its current form in 1697. It contains a huge garden in the baroque style, antique furniture, and a huge theatre. For a deeper look into the regional culture, check out the local museum. It is inside an old cannery, and houses 7,000 years of artifacts related to local history. There are exhibits about the first farmers as well as the history of art.

Activities: Regular Events, Tours, and Recreation

One of the highlights of visiting this area is that it has many exciting festivals every year, such as Mozartfestival and Spargelfest, which celebrates asparagut in all possible ways. The Schwetzinger Festspiele is one of the most well-known and is held every spring. It celebrates opera and classical music, and is located at the palace like many other events. For those who like road trips and beautiful landscapes, this is just one stop along three major tourist routes. One of them runs on the Castle Road, which leads from Mannheim to Prague. If you want to experience world-class recreation, you can find it in one of the many sports centers. Try your hand at activities like squash, bowling, miniature golf, and swimming.
