Solingen, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is the second-largest city in the region known as Bergisches Land. Famous as the so-called ‘City of Blades’ because of its long tradition of making swords, knives and scissors, Solingen is a historic city of medieval architecture. Today, it is well-connected to motorways and railways, linking the city to neighbouring towns and the rest of Europe. For air travel, Düsseldorf and the Cologne/Bonn Airports are the nearest, both accessible by train from Solingen. In addition to a well-developed transport system, the city offers many modern amenities, making it easy to find a suitable hotel in Solingen.

What are some attractions I should see in the area?

One of the main sights that you can show to clients or see on your own is the 12th century Schloss Burg. It is the biggest restored castle in the region, houses a museum, and is host to near-weekly cultural events ranging from theatrical performances to outdoor markets. Head to Brückenpark for some time outdoors beneath the Müngsten Bridge, which at 107m above the ground, is the highest railway bridge in Germany.

What can I expect from the business sector in Solingen?

Solingen is home to many fine manufacturers of cutlery, such as DOVO Steelware, J.A. Henckels, Wüsthof, and Böker, amongst others. There is even a type of steel from the city known as 'Solingenstahl'. The city is part of Bergische Städtedreieck (which also includes Remscheid and Wuppertal), an entrepreneurial region of family-owned companies, metal works industries, and distinct competence in automotive and mechanical engineering. The Grunder und Technologiezentrum, or GUT, provides business advice and infrastructure support, such as office space and event rooms. Solingen also hosts trade fairs throughout the year, like 50 Plus Freude am Leben, a fair devoted to every aspect of the middle stages of life, from health to holidays, leisure and social issues.

What recreational options do I have near my hotel in Solingen?

You might consider a short trip to the Wupper Valley and its easygoing trails. And of course, you must stop into a local beer garden as no trip to Germany would be complete without it. In general it is very easy to spend time outdoors near your hotel in Solingen, as the Bergisches Land is known for its low mountains, woods, and extensive lakes.
