Host to four iconic German rivers, including Moselle and Rhine, ancient and picturesque Trier is not just the home of some of the world’s finest wines, it’s also a model for cross-border cooperation in strong links to the neighbor to the west, Luxembourg. From its legendary origins by an Assyrian prince, beautiful and exciting Trier is a German gem in Rhineland Palatinate, the most Western state in the republic. Trier’s rich history and the verdant beauty of its surrounding landscapes is a winning combination, attracting millions of tourists each year, and providing a robust and mixed local economy. This charming old city counts among its native sons such diverse personalities as Saint Ambrose and Karl Marx.

Location: An ancient treasure in Germany’s Rhineland Palatinate

When your plane touches down on the runway at Frankfurt Airport, you're right in the middle of the Rhineland Palatinate, geographically, the most Western state in the German Federal Republic. One of the gems to be found in this region is the city of Trier. Nestled among the verdant Mosel wine region, where the gently sloping hills are covered with grape vines, Trier is very close to Luxembourg, and is an excellent wine producer.

Business: A stable economy based on wine, service, and cooperation

Trier's location means that wine reigns in its hierarchy of business. Because of its proximity to Luxembourg, many local residents are employed across the border by that country's administrative apparatus, the Grand Duchy. This relationship facilitates a healthy connection to global markets. A positive environment gives rise to a healthy job market including food, woodwork, services, logistics, mechanical engineering, and health.

Culture: Stories of Saint Ambrose and an Assyrian prince

While the clock for Trier's modern history begins ticking with the Romans, legend says that the city actually began with an Assyrian prince 1300 years before, the name Trier derived from his name: Trebeta. The Roman footprint is deep however, and numerous sights, including the city’s landmark, the Porta Nigra gate, as well as impressive excavations, including the Roman Amphitheater, the Porta Alba, and numerous cemeteries reflect the moving past.

Activities: Good wine, trampolines, and toys

Whether it’s a taste for food, fun, or local history, charming old Trier is ready to appease any appetite. Bring the camera and capture the living history in its diverse architecture, from the arching vaults of St. Gangolf to the storybook buildings of the main square Hauptmarkt, where you can shop at the flea market and in the stores, or have a meal at one of the local eateries, where you can sample one of the trademark wines. Take the kids over to Trampoline Trier, where they have some fun and exercise. Or, visit the town’s Toy Museum.
