As a German “luftkrort”, or “air spa”, Waren possesses an air quality so immaculate that it’s considered a health benefit just to spend the night. Sitting along the northern end of the massive Lake Müritz, this town is at the heart of Germany’s Mecklenburg Lake District–“the land of a thousand lakes.” Packing cultural attractions, national parks, and, of course, water sports and swimming abound, Waren is a must-visit for the modern traveler. In between lakeside lures and inland charms, take the time to explore the myriad local churches and architecture. There’s something to see and do for everyone in Waren, so book your visit today.

Location: The Banks of Lake Müritz

A gentle lakeside destination, Waren is located towards the south-central end of the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The town is readily accessible by train from the relatively nearby capital of Berlin (and its international airport), but connections to Germany’s excellent rail network link it to other major cities as well. Bus–and even boat–travel provide a means to reach nearby towns and villages by land or lake.

Culture: A Charming Townscape Against a Natural Backdrop

Much of Waren’s appeal is based around relaxation in a natural setting, but that’s not to slight the man-made attractions in the least. Two stunning medieval churches–St. George’s, around which the Old Town was built, and St. Mary’s, the center of the New Town–provide distinctive landmarks and great jumping-off points for urban exploration. The Müritzeum, a local freshwater aquarium, is one of Germany’s largest, and showcases an interactive introduction to the regional aquatic life. Combined with visits to Müritz National Park and the nearby Damerower Werder Peninsula (with its enclosure of European Bison), there’s plenty to learn about Germany’s lakeside heritage.

Activities: Join the Festivities–or Simply Make Your Own

Visit Waren in the warmer months, and you may get to experience one or more of the annual sailing, swimming, and running competitions. But even if the timing doesn’t allow for this, there’s no reason you can’t get out on the lake or nature trails yourself. Plenty of boats–from small sailing vessels to yachts–are available for rental or charter. Down by the port is also where nightlife alights, and numerous bars and pubs make a great place to end your day with a local beer in hand.
