Although the city of Wesel has a long history dating back more than one thousand years, the region did not become a district in its own right until 1975, when it merged with nearby Dinslaken, Moers, and Rees. Prior to that, all the neighbouring cities existed independently as part of Prussia since their foundations in the 19th Century. Given Wesel is the oldest and largest established city in the region, it became the honorary capital of North-Rhine Westphalia. Not a great deal of its medieval past still remains thanks to damage suffered town in World War 2. However, the awe-inspiring Willibrordi Cathedral, built between 1424 and 1540, is well worth a visit for its blend of Gothic and architecture. But Wesel is mostly frequented by German families enjoying the summer holidays, principally for the wealth of outdoor activities on offer. Mountain bikers, wind surfers, and rock climbers are all catered for, or if you prefer group activities, you can go white-water rafting and sand yachting.

Location: Capital of the Wesel district

Located in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of in north-west Germany, the charming city of Wesel is the capital of the Wesel district, and is in easy reaching distance of several major cities, including Dusseldorf and Dortmund. The closest international airport however in Weeze, approximately 50 kilometres by road. A regular train service also runs from all major cities in the surrounding area.

Culture: Church acoustics

The main cultural centre in Wesel is actually the late gothic basilica of Willibrordi Cathedral. A marvel of jaw-dropping architecture, the acoustics makes the perfect setting for organ recitals, concerts, and other organised groups related to the church. The basilica’s cultural rival, the Ginderich Parish Church of the Assumption is also worth a visit for its early medieval charm and historical reference. Built in the 11th century, the Ginderich is the oldest pilgrimage site in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Activities: Out and about

Wesel is a nature’s playground, and with an abundance of walking trails and recreational activities in the surrounding hills together with the Lippe and Rhine Rivers, there is plenty of opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors.
