Willingen (Upland)- A Mountainside Tourist Hub and Activity Center
Location: A Small Retreat in the German Upland
Willingen is situated in river valleys on the northern edge of the German state of Hesse. Access is provided via roadways and the Uplandbahn railway line. The small, yet international, Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport (PAD) is Willingen’s closest–airports are also located in the larger cities of Hannover and Cologne, each around 200 km from the community.
Culture: An Activity-Centric Lifestyle
This town is a holiday destination at heart, jam-packed with facilities and activities for winter and summer alike. Every year, Willingen hosts the Ski Jumping World Cup on the Mühlenkopfschanze hill–a venue that seats 100,000. Also held here is the BIKE Festival Willingen, with mountain biking marathons, downhill racing, and an exhibition area. The great railway bridge “Das Viadukt” is perhaps the town’s most distinctive landmark.
Activities: Sports and Games Year-Round
If your time in Willingen doesn’t overlap with the massive festivals and events, never fear–there’s plenty to do at your own pace. Try a laid-back day of golfing or a cable-car ride up into the mountains in summer, or ice-skating and spas in winter. Thrills heat up the town any time of year–summer brings rock climbing, hiking, and go karting, while winter visitors can take advantage of the 20 ski lifts, numerous ski jumps, 80 km of cross-country ski trails, and toboggan slopes.
