Greece’s second largest city and a major centre for economic, political, and cultural life is a must-see while visiting this ancient and historic country. Located in northern Greece, Thessaloniki is home to some renowned festivals, including the Thessaloniki International Trade Fair and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. Visitors will have a great opportunity to see historic cultural attractions like the Paleochristian and Byzantine monuments of Thessaloniki, which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, as well as see some fantastic museums exhibiting artefacts from ancient Greece. The city boasts some exciting nightlife, and is known a place where one can shop, dine, and stay in luxurious hotels.

Location: Northern Greece in Central Macedonia

The capital of the region of Central Macedonia, Thessaloniki can be found in northern Greece. The city is a major transport hub for greater Europe and is served by all modes of transportation. If arriving by plane, you can fly into Macedonia International Airport. From there you can access the city centre via metro or bus. If travelling by car, use the A1, A2, or A25 motorways.

Business: One of Greece’s major economic hubs

The city is one of the largest financial and economic centres for all of Greece. Its commercial port is very important, providing access to all of south-eastern Europe and beyond. Aside from banking, the major industry here is tobacco, which historically has been a major crop. The Thessaloniki International Trade Fair is a major economical event hosted here every year, taking place at the International Exhibition Center.

Culture: Home to historical attractions, museums, and events

Known as the cultural capital of Greece, this a place to enjoy any kind of attraction. The National Theatre and the Royal Theatre both host regular events, as well as the Thessaloniki Concert Hall. Museums are plenty and include the Archaeological Museum, among many others. The White Tower is major landmark, and the Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments, amongst them the city walls, numerous churches, and the Latomou Monastery, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Activities: Do some sightseeing and discover the promenade

Aside from its great sightseeing, the seaside promenade is a great place to enjoy an afternoon. Join the locals on a bike ride or simply stroll along and admire all the sailboats in the Thermaic Gulf. There is some great shopping to be done along Tsimiski Street and Proxenou Koromila Avenue. The streets also host some great restaurants and cafes, which must be enjoyed after a long day of seeing the city!
