Héviz – Count fifty shades of blue
Location: Héviz–the highlight of Hungary’s Wild West
Héviz is a relatively small town in the western countryside of Hungary, situated in the largely rural Zala province. The west of Hungary is much less built up then the more industrial north, and the Zala area is prized for its vast wilderness and the natural beauty of the countryside. Due to its popularity as a holiday resort, the town is served by the nearby Héviz–Balaton Airport, which receives flights from across Europe.
Business: Making the most of natural resources
Without question, it is the thermal lake, which drives the economy of Héviz. Many visitors come to Héviz for medical reasons and as a result, a number of surgeries, homeopathy clinics, and wellness spas have sprung up. Popular treatments include balneotherapy, electrotherapy, and mechanotherapy, making Héviz one of the most modern medical centres in Hungary.
Culture: Embrace the beauty of nature
Food and drink play a big role in Héviz culture. Wine from the Zala region is growing in popularity, with the dry white wines in particular proving to be a hit with critics. Locals and visitors alike make use of the thermal lake and the local bathhouses–a true Hungarian pastime.
Activities: Swim, float or hike
Lake Héviz is primarily used for bathing, but for fans of wild swimming, the vast freshwater Lake Balaton is just a few minutes away by car. The hotels of Héviz are equipped with tennis courts, gyms, and swimming pools, while outdoorsy types can explore the beautiful Hungarian countryside, which lies just outside the town.
