The Taj Mahal brings many tourists to Agra, but there is so much more in this Indian city than just this marvelous building. It is home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. The city has a long history that dates back to ancient times, with the earliest mention in the epic the Mahabharata. The official founding of the city was in 1504, when the Sultan Sikandar Lodi moved the capital of his lands from Delhi. The city is mostly associated with the Mughals, who began their rule in 1526, and built many of the notable buildings and monuments in the city, including the Taj Mahal in 1653. In addition to the three UNESCO buildings, the city is also home to several buildings and tombs worth seeing that date back to the Mughal Empire.

Location: City on the Banks of the Yamuna River

On the banks of the Yamuna River lies this city in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India. The airport in Agra has limited service, mainly bringing passengers to Mumbai or Delhi, from where they can catch flights to the rest of the world. There are also railways that take you to Delhi and Madras. Buses and cars can also easily reach Agra from several of the country's highways.

Business: City of Agriculture and Tourism

Tourism plays a significant role in the city's economy due to the Taj Mahal. However, agriculture remains an essential industry, with about 40 percent of the population engaged in it. Iron foundries, leather, and footwear are also popular industries. The Jaypee Hotel and Convention Center has a state-of-the art conference center that has a convention hall that holds 1500 and has all the modern amenities.

Culture: Visit the Beautiful and Ancient Agra Fort

There is little doubt about the draw of the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous attractions in the world, and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. This monument to Mumtax Mahal, the wife of Mughal kind Shah Jahan, took 22 years to build. Another historical site is the Agra Fort, built in 1565 by Mughal emperor Akbar. A tablet at the gate says it was built prior to 1000 and only renovated by Akbar. The beautiful but fort-like exterior holds a paradise within.

Activities: Experience the World's First Interactive Cinema

The gardens in this city, especially the Soami Bagh, Ram Bagh, and Methab Bagh, provide beautiful places in which to stroll and relax. The Mehtab Bagh lies across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal, providing it with perfect vistas of the Taj Mahal. The city is also home to the world's first interactive cinema theater, the Adlabs Multiplex, that plays the film India in Motion.
