The town's history reaches back to prehistoric times, with evidence of ancient dwellings. Its name came from the Latin "lacus," which means village at the lake. It has a rich history, especially as it was home of an important harbor that featured the Veronese custom offices, built in the 14th century. It was also the first of the free Italian municipalities, becoming autonomous in 983 by decree of Emperor Otto II. The town is beautiful, with many beautiful historical villas still standing amid the old, narrow streets of the town surrounded by the medieval city wall. Because of its location, Lazise is a popular destination in which to enjoy not just the beautiful town but also all the activities offered by Lake Garda and the nearby hills.

Location: Beautiful Town on the Eastern Shore of Lake Garda

This resort town is located on the eastern shore of Lake Garda in the Province of Verona about 20 kilometers northwest of the city of Verona. The city center is mainly car-free, but it is easy to access the town. The A22 Brenner-Modena motorway connects the east and north shores of the lake, while the A4 Milan-Venice motorway connects the south shores. There are also train stations on the north and south shores of the lake, making it easy to access by train. Visitors can also arrive by boat.

Business: Ancient Center for Trade and Customs

Although historically a town of market and trade, as well as overseeing the customs for the lake, today the town's main business is tourism. The Dogana Veneta, once the custom's house, now hosts meetings and events. It features 800 square meters that can accommodate up to 300 people for conventions and meetings.

Culture: Take a Step Back in Time

Lazise still has many of its old buildings, providing visitors a chance to step back in time. The Church of Saint Nicolo, which dates back to medieval times, features frescoes by the school of Giotto that date to the 12th century. The customs house Dogana Veneta was built in the 16th century as a way to control all of Lake Garda's commerce. In the 13th and 14th century, the Scaligeri of Verona came to the town and built a castle and walls to protect the town.

Activities: Hike Among the Hills and Olive Groves

The city offers much more than just the many fun activities of Lake Garda. The city boasts hiking trails among the beautiful and picturesque hills, olive groves, vineyards, cypresses, and the long coastline along the lake. There are also opportunities to cycle or horseback ride on the same panoramic trails. Enjoy learning all about the local and exotic sea creatures at the Gardaland Sea Life Aquarium.
