Torri del Benaco – Get away from the hustle and bustle in this beautiful town
Location: The mid-point on the eastern side of Lake Garda
Only 40 kilometres north-west of Verona with its international airport, and just off the A22 (E45) that follows the eastern side of Lake Garda on the coast road SR249. The town has great access to the whole of the lake and the mountains and hills that rise up behind it, which attract the outdoor enthusiast to its hotels and apartments.
Business: Conference centres nearby
Verona has conference and exhibition facilities and is an easy commute of less than 50 kilometres to the west on good roads, but be aware there are tolls on some. To the north and around a one hour’s drive away is the Centro Congressi Interbrennero Trento with excellent facilities for up to 280 delegates. It also offers booths for simultaneous translation of speakers in the main conference hall. Torri del Benaco is a relaxing place to stay that is relatively close to facilities yet allows you a chance to relax at the end of a busy day in beautiful surroundings.
Culture: A wonderful 14th Century castle still in use
The Romans used the town as a port and defensive position building a castrum, which translates as 'Great Legionary Encampment', in the town. The Scaliger Castle and walls are thought to have been built on this ancient Roman site using some of the brickworks of the fortifications in its construction. The castle, once privately owned, is now the home of the town's Ethnographic Museum.
Activities: Water sports, walks, and mountain biking
With an enviable position between Lake Garda and the ridge of hills that stretch along the eastern side of the coastline, Torri del Benaco is a haven for those seeking outdoor adventure. The lake offers so many opportunities for 'messing about in boats', to quote Kenneth Grahame, that any water rat will be in their element here. Many visitors are drawn to the excellent mountain bike trails of the surrounding hills, with guides available to take you on off-the-beaten-track adventures. The same hills are also a popular walking choice for hikers of all abilities, from the low foothills around the lake to higher peaks with stunning views of the area.
