Sliema was once a quiet fishing village, receiving the name Tas-Sliema, which means peace and comfort, from a chapel for the Virgin Mary. With the rise of tourism to Malta, this coastal town became part of the main coastal resort area, along with St. Julian. Visitors enjoy coming to this town, which is a hub for shopping, cafes and restaurants, to enjoy the beautiful coast and the shopping. It has several quality hotels and is one of the major commercial areas of Malta. The town hit prominent in the latter part of the 19th century as wealthier Valletta residents came to the town as a summer residence. Today, this resort town is a modern and vibrant town where all amenities are within walking distance. The residents are friendly and welcoming, making this town an enjoyable place for a Maltese holiday.

Location: Resort Town on the Maltese Coast

This Maltese town is located on the northeast coast on the peninsula that lies across the Marsamxett Harbour from the city of Valletta. It extends from Manoel Island to Balluta Bay. The international airport is about an hours drive, and Valetta is about 20 minutes by car. There are also regular buses from Valletta, which can be very crowded in the peak tourist season. There are also regular ferries from Valetta.

Culture: Visit the Few Remaining Historical Buildings in Town

Although many of the older buildings were demolished to make way for modern homes and hotels, some of the beautiful art nouveau and Victorian era houses and buildings remain on the streets of this coastal town. Six traditional Maltese houses retain their traditional architectures and Maltese balconies and have heritage status, ensuring they will remain. The Stella Maris Church, also known as the Mother Parish Church of Tas-Selima, was built in 1878 and is another architectural beauty in the town.

Activities: Enjoy the Beach by Day and Discos at Night

One of the biggest attractions of Sliema is the beautiful beaches and coastline with several places for swimming and sun bathing, including the Exiles beach, Font Ghadir, and the Tigne. When you are not enjoying the beautiful costal locations of the town, you can enjoy the great shopping, as it offers the largest and most modern shopping locations in the country. Walking along the rocky coastline to view the beautiful vista of the Mediterranean during sunset provides the perfect way to end the day, or make the transition between dinner and visiting the local discos.
