Asunción is the capital of Paraguay, and is located on the Paraguay River to the south-west of the country. The financial and manufacturing sectors are the main drivers of local growth. Its stock exchange is an important player in the wider South American economy and continues to expand each year. The city centre is compact and walkable, with the Mariscal López neighbourhood being a focal point of city’s larger stores and shopping. It’s around here and the nearby Recoleta neighbourhood that many of the best Asunción hotels can be found.

What are some of the defining characteristics of this city?

Asunción is a sprawling city with many high-rises flanking the river and numerous parks dotted between them. It’s nicknamed the ‘Mother of Cities’ because of its long history, and is indeed one of the continent’s most continually inhabited locales. Since the 20th century, Asunción has seen an influx of international residents who have made their own mark on this diverse destination. Its downtown area contains a concentration of businesses, conference centres and malls. Along with the bustling Mariscal López neighbourhood, the Plaza de los Heroes is a great place to find markets selling locally-made goods.

Why should business travellers consider going to Asunción?

Paraguay continues to enjoy sustained growth on a level that rivals its neighbours and makes it an attractive place for foreign investment. The government is actively looking to promote its economy as an inclusive one that embraces a variety of industries. National exports are largely agricultural, while Asunción continues to develop its growing financial sector. The city is home to the World Trade Center Asunción, a modern office complex housing many of the city’s major corporations. Near this is the Carmelitas Center, offering meeting and conference space.

What else is there to see when I book my hotel in Asunción?

The city’s official buildings are particularly impressive. These include the rose-coloured Museum of the National Congress and the National Cathedral. Guided tours are available, although many visitors enjoy exploring the compact city centre, near their Asunción hotel, independently. Paraguayan cuisine is focused around a diverse range of ingredients, but Asunción’s particular location makes it a great place for local seafood. Barbecue, known as ‘asado’, is also very popular. In the neighbourhood of Mariscal López, you’ll find the La Paraguayita and Rolandi restaurants, both highly regarded in the city.
