This holiday town began its known history at the turn of the 16th century as a notable mining village, a leader for iron-ore. Then, tourism became popularized in the area when it was linked by rail to Myslakowice and began receiving over 2,000 visitors a day. This boosted the hotel industry as well, so that now thousands of unique accommodations exist in this popular destination. The mining of metals still promotes the growth of the town. The current population sits at around 5,000, adding to its charm as a getaway, and it is often an alternative to the Alps. Those who love spending time in the outdoors will be awe-struck by all the beautiful landscape surrounding this small but proud Polish city.

Location: Situated in the Polish Lomnica Valley

Sitting in south-western Poland, this large village is at the foot of the Sniezka, known as Snow Mountain in English. It is part of the Karkonosze Mountains, making the landscape of the town itself quite steep. In fact, the main road rises up to a whopping 820 meters above sea level. The town is part of Jelenia Góra County, Lower Silesian Voivodeship, the whole area being a popular tourist destination due to its preservation of history. The border of the Czech Republic is also nearby.

Culture: Youth Hostels and 13th Century Temple

One of the main testaments to local history is the Norwegian-style Lutheran Vang Chapel dating back to the 13th century. It was built from wood and according to traditional patterns of Scandinavian temples. The most sensational part about it is that no nail was used in the construction of the building. For another look into what this town used to be like, venture to the summit of the Sniezka Mountain where a youth hostel stands as a symbol of the region. It was built in 1975. Lastly, take a break and visit the Sports and Tourism Museum, which delves into not just mining history but also more interesting facts about the village.

Activities: Ideal for Winter Sports and Hiking

There is no doubt that the main reason thousands of visitors flock to Karpacz each year is the popular winter sport opportunities. The ski slopes range from those for beginners to those that are challenging to the advanced. Even children can get a knack for skiing here. There are many ski lifts and chair lifts to ensure a simple experience, and for more excitement, you can try your hand at ski jumping. Sticking with the town's winter theme, there is a local skating rink for those who want a different kind of sporting experience. For the few warm months a year, many make a hike of the mountains in the region, challenging themselves even more.
