In the 14th century, this historical city was full of craftsmen and their guilds, making it an important trade center. It was also a haven for Germans in Transylvania, being the home of the assembly of Germans there. In later years, it transformed into a center for Transylvanian Romanian ethnics, and many companies began having headquarters here. This rocketed it into its high economics position in the country today. In modern times, it has become a county capital and the home of 137, 000 residents. It is known for its cultural heritage, which it keeps alive with many museums, maintained buildings, and festivals.

Location: Near the Geographical Center of Romania

Located around 20 kilometers from the Făgăraș Mountains and only 12 from the Cibin Mountains, this city sits in the Cibin Depression. A river of the same name as well as many streams runs through the town. Some of the most important roads and rail lines come through the city as well. The climate stays very cool to cold, averaging around eight degrees Celsius with plenty of rainfall each year.

Business: One of the Highest Rates of Foreign Investment

Sibiu is considered to be one of the most prosperous cities in Romania, and for good reason. The most important industries to the area include automobile manufacturing, textiles, and electrical components. The stock exchange is also an important part of the entire country's economy. Most of the over 130, 000 residents are employed in industrial work, but commerce is also a popular career.

Culture: A European Capital of Culture

There are easily a never-ending amount of cultural attractions available to those visiting Sibiu. The Lower Town alone has four fortification towers as well as the oldest church in the city dating back to the late 1200s. The Grand Square offers one the most important Baroque monuments in the country, Brukenthal Palace. It is the three theatres, however, that provide the best entertainment for locals, with one of them dating back to the 18th century.
