Sant Llorenç des Cardassar – A Traditional Mallorcan Town
Location: Within easy reach of the coast and the island's capital
Sant Llorenç des Cardassar is located close to the east coast of Mallorca, only a short 15-minute drive from the popular resorts of Cala Millor, S’Illot, and Sa Coma with their beautiful sandy beaches and plethora of restaurants, shops, and bars. Also nearby is the small town of Son Carrio, known for its interesting church. The Church of Sant Miquel is a Romanesque building with a rose window thought to have been designed by the architect Antoni Gaudí. Mallorca’s capital Palma and its international airport are located only 60 kilometres to the west of the town and can be reached directly along the main autovia MA-15 road. This makes for a fast and straightforward drive through some of the island’s gorgeous countryside, home to a number of vineyards, fig trees, and almond plantations.
Culture: A relaxed atmosphere around the central square
The Plaça Nova square in the middle of the town is the central hub of activity in this otherwise sleepy neighbourhood. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy relaxed coffees or a bite to eat outside the square’s friendly cafes. It is also in this square that the impressive Parish Church is located. The church displays items such as a Gothic statue of Mary and Jesus, and a Romanesque sculpture of La Mare de Déu Trobada dating back to the 13th century.
Activities: Spanish dining, festivals, and a local market
The church and the main square come alive during religious holidays, such as on the 5th January each year. On this evening, locals celebrate the arrival of the kings of Orient, and gifts are given to the children. The town also has several delightful places to eat, including the acclaimed Es Pati restaurant. Its homely feel and locally sourced ingredients attract visitors from across the island. Every Thursday, from 9.00-13.00, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar hosts a market where it is possible to purchase handcrafts, clothing, fruits, vegetables, clothing, and footwear.
