Saas-Fee - A haven for winter sports
Location: Surrounded by magnificent peaks
Located in the Saastal, otherwise known as the Saas Valley, Saas-Fee is centrally located and easy to reach from all directions. This small town of 1,659 people welcomes a huge influx of tourists every year, due to its snow-peak activities and prime location in the Swiss Alps surrounded by thirteen gigantic mountains, which lends the area the nickname of the “four-thousand” mountains, due to their extreme elevation of over 4,000 meters. The nearest airport is Sion, although most international visitors will arrive in nearby Zurich or Geneva, where you can either catch the train to Saas-Fee or a connecting flight to Sion.
Business: Ski resorts galore
The town boasts very little unemployment, and most of its economy relies on tourism. Over half the town work in either hotels or restaurants, with high fluctuations, depending on the seasons. Numerous shops, ski lifts, and restaurants also cater to the thousands of visitors that flock here each year.
Culture: Explore a world of ice
Though most visitors who come to Saas-Fee spend the majority of their days on the slopes, tourists who enjoy indoor activities can find plenty to do here as well. There are multiple art exhibits as well as wine and beer tastings held throughout the year. Those who wish to take a peek inside a glacier can head to the Ice Pavilion and explore the world’s biggest ice grotto.
Activities: Winter sports and extreme treks
In the winter, skiers and snowboarders will feel as though they are in heaven on the fresh snow slopes of Saas-Fee. Outdoor enthusiasts can also find a lot to do here, as the area offers mountain treks throughout the year as well as hiking opportunities in the warmer months. The most popular route is the stunning Almagellerhorn adventure trail. Canyoning, glacier safaris, and climbing expeditions, are also accessible for fans of rock climbing. Nightlife is relatively low key, although there are plenty of bars and a smattering of night clubs, and with over 100 restaurants to choose from, there is no shortage of places to find sumptuous dishes.
