A gathering site for many cultures since its founding in AD 130 by Attalus II Philadelphus, this sprawling resort on the southwestern edge of Turkey hugs the Mediterranean shore. Its numerous landmarks and archaeological sites make it a living museum of the region. Modern hotels make Antalya a go-to destination for vacationers seeking a dose of Turkish history combined with the comfort, convenience, and amenities of an excellent resort. Fill your camera with breathtaking vistas of the Mediterranean and nearby Taurus Mountains. Snag that perfect souvenir to remember your visit at a local souq, or just soak up the sun at the town's main beach, Knoyaalti Plaji. Old and new coexist happily in this beautiful Turkish resort by the sea.

Location: Great climate and beaches between sea and mountains

Thanks to the Taurus Mountains, this popular resort city poised on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea on Turkey’s southwestern shore is spared much of the persistent northerly winds that buffet many other spots in the region. Situated on the Gulf of Antalya, its hot summer climate makes it an ideal haven for sun worshipers and those anxious to relax outdoors, no matter what time of year. Located on the so-called “Turkish Riviera,” Antalya is Turkey’s biggest resort and is accessible by air, auto, bus or sea.

Business: Fun, Fruit, and Wonderful Memories a Major Export of Antalya

Though tourism is Antalya's stock in trade, agricultural products occupy a large niche in the local economy. These include citrus fruits, cotton, cut flowers, olives, olive oil, and bananas. In fact, the city satisfies over sixty percent of the area's fruit and vegetable demand. The city also has a small shipbuilding sector specializing in yacht and pleasure boats. Hotels, bars, restaurants, and shops offer employment of all sorts. Sun Express and Corendon Airlines also make their home here.

Culture: From Hadrian to the Ottomans, a Rich History in Antalya

Antalya takes its name from its founder, Attalus II Philadelphus, King of Pergamon who gave the city its start in 150 BC. Since then, it has had a multicultural population including Muslims, Christians, and Jews. The apostle Paul knew this place. Prior to the increased accessibility that developed over time, Antalya was considered a simple backwater port. With improved roads and modes of transportation, it has blossomed into the major tourist hub it is today.

Activities: Sail, Swim, Dine, or Shop at this Middle East Resort

Turkish history is preserved in the old Roman-Ottoman quarter of Kalieci, where you'll enjoy a breathtaking view of the Bey Mountains and the harbor where ships have plied the waters since the time of the Romans. Learn about Antalya's rich history at the Archaeological Museum, or at sites like Hadrian's Gate, built for that Roman emperor around 130 AD. Descend the stone steps to Antalya's charming harbor district and grab a bite to eat. Take the kids to the Beach Park where they can ride the waterslide and see the dolphins, sea lions, and white whales at Dolphin Land.
